Unless I miss my guess, Thanksgiving is just two weeks from today. In many of the years past - MOST of the years past - this was a time for me to stock up on turkeys. I remember one year, buying 4 turkeys - two of them were 15¢ a pound, one was 17¢ a pound, and one was 19¢ a pound. We ate a lot of turkey in the coming months, but those were really nice prices for a lot of meat.

I know food prices have skyrocketed lately. Believe me, I KNOW this. Still, I had hopes for some good turkey prices. I knew 19¢ a pound - or lower - was not going to happen this year. But I was hoping for, oh, maybe 49¢ a pound (not too many years ago, I would have laughed at that as a “good price”, but oh, how things change.) The past few weeks, I’ve been scouring sales ads. And running to the calendar, saying “This IS November, isn’t it? Where are the turkey sales?”

Well, this past weekend, I got my answer. The first ad, turkeys were on sale for 99¢ a pound - WITH a seperate $25 purchase. On to the next ad - again, 99¢ a pound, but no additional purchase required. The third ad - I believe it was 29¢. But here’s the catch - you had to buy a ham also, for $2.49 a pound, if I remember correctly. I have a very similar ham in my freezer, that I paid 99¢ a pound for, a couple of months ago. NOT a good deal at all.

So, what am I doing this year? I’ll be buying a turkey, but only ONE turkey. I’ll be buying it at the store that has 99¢ a pound with seperate $25 purchase. Because another sad truth is, it’s not hard at all to spend $25 at one store anymore. And I have a coupon that will give me $5 off $50, so that will help a bit.

Gee, I remember the good old days - not too long ago - that I almost never used $5 off $50 coupons, because I just didn’t spend that much at any one store. The way grocery prices have hit the stratosphere, sadly, it’s not hard to hit $50 any more. And afterwards, gaze at the purchases and think “THAT’S $50 worth of food?”

Gobble, gobble.
