Creative Play for Little Ones

Christmas of 1985 was a momentous occasion for my husband and I. Our first baby was 4 1/2 months old and we were SO excited to share this fun holiday with her! I woke her at 6 a.m. (yes, I AM crazy LOL) and we ‘helped’ her open her little gifts we’d bought. […]

Delivered to your door - but what’s the price?

A short time back, a friend of mine was singing the praises of one of those “grocery delivery” type places.  You shop online, pay, and the groceries are delivered to your door.  She raved about the quality of the food (and having had dinner at her house, I agree, it was very good), the time […]

Gearing up for any event is a daily affair….

I know us frugal people or ff’ers think differently about hosting events in our home or planning major events than other people.  I know that because I listen to the other folks at work and often they are like…”so and so is having a birthday party…so we had to run out and buy a […]

Bakery thrift stores are a big help for non-bread-bakers!

Baking bread is one of those things that I’ve always said I’m going to do.  When the question “What new frugal thing are you going to try?” gets asked, chances are I’ll say “baking bread.”  In preparation for that, one summer I scouted yardsales and accumulated several bread pans.  I had good intentions.  And I […]

Feeding the After School Hungries

I remember, back in my school days that I was STARVING when I came home from school! Absolutely STARVING. Gosh, it had been 3 1/2 hours since lunch. If I asked, Mom would let me have bread and butter, sometimes sprinkled with sugar or once in a while there was a cookie […]

Seasonal shopping and the high cost of fruit

Okay, it’s early in the morning and the creative juices just aren’t flowing when it comes to titles today.  Juices…citrus…hmmm….okay, enough of that.
One of the ways to keep grocery costs down is to buy food items when they are in season.  If the items are in season AND locally grown - even better.
Well, I live […]

The humble carrot!

A vegetable that is always a good buy at the grocery store. Even more frugal is groing them in your garden and storing them for the winter, weather in a cold room,by freezing or canning.
Because of it’s sweetness it’s good for baking as well as it’s use as a vegetable.
One of my favorite carrot recipes […]

Grocery shopping and my husband - DO leave home without him (occasionally)

When I was growing up, my mom did the grocery shopping.  Sometimes by herself, sometimes with the kids along.  My dad, in the grocery store?  I don’t think so.  As a result, I grew up thinking that most men didn’t like to grocery shop.
While I have never done an actual poll - scientific or otherwise - […]

Family Fun on a Frugal Budget

Family activities are always a focus in our home. We have fun playing together as a family and dh and I feel the time we spend together is important. The kids are very supportive of having family activities…. sometimes our budget is not. lol
We set aside one night a week specifically for […]

Here is one of my favorite OAMC sessions

When ground beef is on sale , I buy quite a bit and make up this all purpose mix. Out of this mixture I make meatballs, burgers and meatloaves. So handy to have in the freezer for quick meals. The recipe is from allrecipes.com:
