Toilet Cleaning 101!!!
Posted by: TiggerHello to all my Frugal Friends!!! My name is Tiggersassy although I go by Tigger most of the time and I am part of the Frugal Family here.
I am the owner of a commercial cleaning business with my husband and today’s tip is how to clean a toilet. Having cleaned over 1000 toilets in the 10 years we have been in business, we have pretty much seen it all and have become toilet cleaning experts LOL!!!
Many times we are asked if we can clean toilets that seem beyond hope yet we have been able to get them looking brand new!!! Our tip today may seem a little bizarre but I can guarantee it works!!! Of course, this being a frugal site, this cleaning tip is extremely frugal and environmentally sound as well.
To get started, you will need some Dawn dish soap (other soap will work as well but we like this best), some baking soda and a 320 grit piece of sandpaper. Do I have you guessing yet?
Now empty the toilet. That’s right, empty the bowl of the toilet as this tip works best without water in the bowl. Think about it, if water is in the bowl and you are pouring liquid cleaner in it, how can you really scrub it?
Take a little bit of the dishsoap and add it to the baking soda until you have a paste. Take the paste and apply it to the bowl of the toilet, making sure to really get it on the grungy looking parts or the parts with lime buildup on it. Then take the sandpaper and use it to scrub. The sandpaper will not scratch the porcelain at all as long as it is 320 grit. Now you may have to scrub a bit, but it will come up clean.
Once it is clean, just flush and you are done!!! Then just rinse and repeat to keep it clean.
Hope you find this tip useful,
Tigger

Wow, this is really timely! My husband was just saying that one of the new toilets (we replaced both) wasn’t looking, well, brand new anymore. It never occurred to me to remove the water from the bowl, but it makes sense!

I am kinda embarrassed to ask, but how exactly do you drain the water out of the bowl?

Don’t be embarrassed! I shut the water off to the toilet by turning the knob to the water supply under/behind the toilet. Remember, “Right tighty, lefty loosy”. Then I flush the toilet a couple of times and if needed, you can put on gloves and get any remaining water out with a paper cup. Flushing removes a fair amount.
