What month is it again?
Posted by: TammyOkay, my calendar says February but my thermometer says March, maybe April!
It’s been unusually warm her for southern New England. Instead of 20′s and 30′s we’ve been experiencing 40′s and 50′s and even a periodic 60′s!
I tapped my maple trees back on January 31st when the daytime temps starting going above freezing and the nights were below freezing and they stayed that way for a week or more! I’ve been boiling since the first week of February! I usually don’t tap until near the end of February.
Okay and as if I can’t get any more messed up with the warm temps, I succumbed to the magical wording on a seed package the other day: “Plant as early as soil can be worked” Come on! I’m not sure the ground even froze this winter! I’ve been weeding and preparing my beds for planting while I boiled sap. I built a new raised bed (pics in another post ). I’ve been playing in the ever-warming soil for weeks! I admit it. I caved. I rummaged through the seed basket and couldn’t help myself! Radishes, Sugar Ann peas (dwarf sugar-snaps) and regular sugar snap peas went into the ground. I planted Simpson Elite and bib lettuces in the cold frame, too.
So, that said, the snow is my fault!
I’m trying to have faith that Mother Nature hasn’t decided that NOW is finally a good time to deliver Old Man Winter to my door step. She’s considering it simply because I dared to defy her and planted seeds. If I refuse to sign for Old Man Winter do you think they’ll have to take him back?
