Backyard Sugaring Time!
Posted by: TammyAfter a rather jiggy start, I’m out straight with backyard sugaring time!
The snow finally melted enough to afford me access to a few more of my maple trees so those were tapped. I’ve been collecting as much as I boil every day and the other day I actually collected 9 gallons but only boiled 6 of my stored sap. That was about a half-day’s boiling because the morning was a pouring, wet mess.
I also have rediscovered some of my garden beds! I’ve been pretty bored being outside and not being able to work my garden at all. It felt wonderful to dig into my defrosted manure piles and soil and blend the two into a gardener’s sweet fruition. I might actually plant some dwarf sugar snap peas today. They’ll be producing ahead of my full-sized sugar snaps and will fill in the bottom of the vertical fences, making the best use of my space.
Oh and a bright red spot in one of my beds surprised me yesterday! RHUBARB! I was raking away leaves and saw the 3 red buds right away. Color in a sea of brown! It will be weeks before I’m harvesting my first stalks but it gives me hope that Mother Nature really is allowing spring this year!
