Tuna prices seem to be diving

Posted by: Sue

First, let me say that tuna has been a pretty good bargain for a long time.  I’ve been tracking prices for years, and I am still able to get tuna for 49¢ a can – same as years ago.  A lot of the time, I need to go to Aldi or Save-A-Lot to get that price, but the grocery stores tend to put it on sale for 49¢ a can quite frequently.

Well, the past few weeks, I’ve been doing better than 49¢ a can, courtesy of the grocery store loss leaders.  Maybe it’s a Lenten special.  But a couple of weeks back, it was 38¢ a can.  I bought several cans, and had planned to get more, but the sale ended.  Before I could kick myself for procrastinating, a different grocery store had it on sale 3 cans for 99¢.  Hmmm…33¢ a can is an even better deal.  The limit was three cans, and I wasted no time in getting my cheaper tuna.

Now, this week – one of the grocery stores has tuna for 28¢ a can.  I am loving this!  I scooped up six more cans of tuna the second day of the sale, and supplies were already getting low.  I mean, 28¢ a can is a great, great price!

I’m not sure the low prices will continue over the next few weeks, or if this is it, and I’ll be back to 49¢ per can tuna.  I do see a lot of tuna sandwiches in our future.  Or cold tuna and noodle salad.  I wish I could use it for casseroles, but that’s where my husband draws the line.  Apparently, he believes that tuna, like revenge, is a dish best served cold.

We stock up on tuna as well, although I have not seen those beautiful deals here. When we have extra money, we buy a case or two of something from Aldi’s for our tornado/storm shelter. We bought a case of tuna a few months ago. Last month was Aldi’s version of beefaroni. Not the best thing in the world, but tornado alley can mean several weeks with no power.

Tuna and ready-made soups (which is great for just-had-a-baby-nearly-bled-to-death-meals) we rotate out to our kitchen. Chef boyardee type stuff, we donate 6 months before expiration to a food bank.

I wonder if tuna prices are going down with all the talk of mercury. I know my family has not been eating as much as we have in the past.

Tuna here in Louisville Kentucky has frequently run 3 and 4 for dollar on sale for the last couple of years. The current price of .49 seems high to me as I haven’t seen it 4 for a dollar in about 6 months and 3 for .99 only twice in that time frame. It use to run at least once a month….point being I feel like tuna has gone up.
