Spring on the homestead
Posted by: TammyI’ve just ended my maply syrup season here in New England. I could have gotten another week of sap production but being that this was my first year REALLY attempting to harvest more than a pint, I did well. I’ve learned that I need to have a more efficient evaporation system and fire area. This is something I’ll have to research for next year. Perhaps after planting is done, I’ll have a bit of a lull to mull my options.
In the meantime, I’ve been outside working the garden again today! I’m creating a vertical bed for my climbing plants like snow peas, beans and cucumbers. The term, “breaking sod” is taking on a special understanding for me now! I’ve only got a 3′ by 16′ bed to create and breaking the sod is hard work! I couldn’t imagine having to do acres by hand back in the 1800′s! I’m not sure if it’s breaking sod or breaking your back!
A sure sign that spring is here! The peepers are peeping! Those are small frogs out in the wetlands of our property that “wake up” with the warm spring weather. Hearing the peepers are a sure sign that spring has arrived. The robins are back as well and the birds are chirping happily. Sigh… such contentment with such a beautiful day.
As I get back into the outdoors work, I’m having to pay attention to what is done and when. The weather is nice today, thus I have to focus on the outside work. Whereas tomorrow isn’t looking too promising so I’ll focus on some inside chores then. It’s not hard falling into rhythm with nature when you can slow down and listen to it.
Well, my grilled tomato and cheese sandwich is done and so is my break. Back to breaking sod (or my back, whichever comes first! LOL!).
